Congratulations to these students for getting invited to June presentations!

This list is being updated right now.  It will be updated until Tuesday, June 1, 2010.  If your name has an (e) next to it, you need to talk to me and/or Adam.

Also, Asia, Candy, Jonathan Acosta, both Samantha’s, and Whitley need to come and talk to me.

(Revised) Evaluation of the Results format

Evaluation of the Results
“Old” Design of the CanMy “New” Design of the Can
Radius, r = _________ (don’t forget the units)

Height, h = _________

Volume, V = _________  (don’t forget the justification for each step)

Surface, SA = ____________
Radius, r = _________ (don’t forget the units)

Height, h = _________

Volume, V = _________  (don’t forget the justification for each step)

Surface, SA = ____________

Check to see if the surface area decreased

Remember that the whole PBAT was about minimizing the surface area while maintaining the volume.... check and double-check to see if your new surface area indeed is smaller than the old surface area

Extensions for the PBAT

  1. Percentage of difference - Surface Area: Research what the percentage of difference is and find and explain the percentage of difference between the old and new surface area
  2. Domain and range: Research what "the domain and range" of a function are, and find and explain the domain and range of your surface area function.
  3. Significant digit: Research what the significant digit is and find and explain what significant digits we should keep for our project.
  4. (Updated) Try an alternate approach to confirm your findings (hint: solve the volume formula for r, instead of h) and show that your results are still the same.  Make connections between the two approaches.

Don't forget to fill out the form to create your models!

If you haven't checked your email and filled out the form below, click on below image to fill the form out as soon as possible.  Otherwise, you won't be able to create your models.

A sample letter to a company for the PBAT - The Can Project

I just wrote a sample letter for you to read.  I actually had a lot of fun writing this letter.  I hope you have fun while you write yours.  I might have put too much silliness in the letter, so please refrain from using too much of that.  Otherwise, good luck!  Don't forget that the first draft is due next Tuesday, 5/18.

Due Dates for the letter - PBAT: The Can Project

Next week (The 3rd week of May)
  • Creating models of the old and the new cans - (M) 5/17/10
  • First draft of the letter - (T) 5/18/10
The week after next week (The 4th week of May)
  • Second draft of the letter - (T) 5/25/10
  • Final draft of the letter - (F) 5/28/10
Then we will have two weeks in June to prepare for the presentation.  The first week of June would be used for preparing slides and speaker notes.  The second week of June would be used for mock presentations.

What we have done and what we still need to do

Here's a link to the document that lists what we have done and what we still need to do regarding the PBAT: The Can Project.

The contents of the document are also pasted below.

PBAT: The Can Project

What we’ve done (not in order)What we still need to do
  • Measured the can’s radius, height, volume, and surface area
  • Combined the volume formula and the surface area formula by solving for height
  • Graphed the generalized height by varying the radius without changing the volume
  • Found missing radii (given the volume and the height) or find missing heights (given the volume and the radii)
  • Described the tables and the graphs
  • Found the new surface area function by solving the volume formula for the height and substituting the new height formula into the surface area function
  • Found the minimum surface area
  • Create models of the old and the new can
  • Write a letter to the company that explains the benefits of your new design compared to their old design.
  • Revise the letter to complete the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd drafts
  • Prepare for the presentation by creating the slides and writing the speaker notes

Exit Slip 9. Connecting the volume and the surface area functions for my can

  1. Application: How is your new surface area function going to be used for this PBAT? What is the ultimate goal of finding this new function?
  2. Multiple Representation: How would you use this function to visually represent the relationship between the height and the surface area of your can?

Exit Slip 8. Connecting the volume and the surface area formulas

Write your response as a new post on your blog.

  1. Why is it necessary for us to combine these two formulas (the volume and the surface area formulas)?
  2. Connection to your can: What would you need to do if you were to apply the same skill to your can?  Write the steps that you would take.

Importance of “comments” and “labels” of each post

comments-encouraged As we get closer to the writing part of your PBAT, the comments and labels will increasingly play an important role for all of you.  First of all, the exchange of ideas will help you recognize different perspectives.  Secondly, you can search your own blog with key words if you need ideas or descriptions of a concept or an activity.

Therefore, please don’t forget to keep reading comments on your posts and writing comments on other students’ posts, as well as labeling each of your post.  We will have a day in May when I will be pulling up a random blog in class to see how many of you are commenting on others’ posts.  Hey, it’s May now!  It will happen soon.

Please remember that comments should be focused on helping others mathematically.
